Crossroads (09:45) From the ancient city of Sneek in the north-western tip of his Dutch homeland, Ferdy Ouderkerken has formulated a rare blend of skill and production talent. Inspired by acts as diverse as Sasha, The Doors and Thom Yorke, Ferdy's rise to the high altar of EDM was rapid. Early work was signed to Global Underground alongside collaborative multi-track deals for Armin van Buuren's Armada imprint, Nick Warren's Hope and Eelke Kleijn's Outside The Box. With such an illustrious start to his production career, Ferdy has gone on to gain a considerable reputation in the underground progressive and deep house movements. Always looking to innovate in his music, a strong partnership was forged with Particles in 2012 with a remix of Fran Von Vie and the "Keep Control" EP followed by the seven track "Spaceman" offering that perfectly illustrated Ferdy's dance floor sensibilities. Remixes of EP track, "Home Coming", from Pole Folder and Weepee followed with a plethora of support for his music coming from the likes of Hernan Cattaneo, Nick Warren and Jaytech. Now, Ferdy provides a sophomore offering as Particles is proud to announce the brand new "Crossroads" EP. An underlying sense of melancholy runs through the sextet of tracks comprising the "Crossroads" EP. Opening offering "Why" combines a sense of tension through use of sustained pads and vocal treatments beneath a hypnotic techno kick and deep bass groove as echoes of early Delerium and Underworld resonate. "Time To Say Goodbye" provides a deep house moment with its low-slung rhythms, vocal whisperings and repetitive chord stabs as they converge to form a delightful swaying groove. "Intention" provides a standout moment with its cavernous yet warm bass line that slips and slides against a beautifully crafted motif that meanders in and out of the light percussive rhythms and metronomic kick drum. Fourth track, "Agreement" continues the bass themes of its predecessors, accompanied this time by a shuffling organic percussion section that is filled with shakers and hi-hats, locking itself to the bass groove while vocal harmonies play out over sustained vibrato chords. With perhaps playful reference to an earlier work, "8.08" provides a stripped back beat and deep house vibe is dominated by a booming kick drum and bouncing bass. As stepped chord sequences play out in tape-delayed glory, twisted vocals are mirrored atop to add a further layer of innovative texture. Title track "Crossroads" closes proceedings as its swirling pads traverse the stereo spectrum like distant waves. Before long a series of chord stabs provides a continuing theme against the backdrop of straight house beats. Lively effects once again make generous use of the stereo spectrum before a detuned lead drone and hypnotic vocal cut combine to create a lustrous layers of textures to close.
