16:09 VA - Riddimentary: Diplo Selects Greensleeves (2011) | |
Artist: Various Artists Quote Most listeners should observe after this rendering, Diplo acquired some of his sonic edge by digging deep into reggae’s dusty LP’s & 45s; some could even say he swack’ed Peter Tosh, no harm done there. Outside of a particularly awful version of Gregory Isaacs’ “Night Nurse,” (quite possibly unforgivable in some circles), this riddim-rundown gets high marks. Given the keys to Greensleeves’ deep catalogue, the post-hipster darling does well to dust off some of the best and even more obscure highlights from the famed label’s countless dubplates. The UK powerhouse imprint was subsidized by VP Records in 2008, but this measure was a mere unification of the global reggae distribution belt. In the 21st century, Greensleeves’ wares have worn out many an Ipod with an astounding 90 riddims alone, entirely of the dancehall variety (reference that Lumidee “Uh Oh” ladies and relive those glory days at spinning class). The order of the set here is of the 80’s variety, when the synthetic palate wasn’t quite as broad. The mix itself is pretty flawless taken in total, just a couple of minor speed bumps along the way including the dearly departed Mr. Isaacs’ selection and a slightly obvious cue-up of J.C. Lodge’s “Telephone Love.” His lead drop is quite fantastic with “Who Is The Ruler,” by Alpha & Omega. Follow Dip’s table-turning into Hugh Mundell’s “Jacqueline” all the way to Prince Far I’s “Survival” and you’ll discover excellent drops and blends throughout. Flavorful and fulfilling in a time of mixmaster forgeries, let’s hope this Diplo offering gets a few retro-minded kids into classic dancehall; dubstep and Bmore Club are fine but dancehall/reggae’s slower and lower BPMs are just as suitable to get your sex-ified swerve on.
